General FAQ

Yes, most extended benefit plans cover all or a significant portion of physiotherapy assessment and treatment fees. For specifics about your plan's coverage, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly.

No. Since 1995, physiotherapists have been recognized as Primary Health Professionals, allowing you to access physiotherapy services directly without a physician's referral. However, some extended healthcare providers may still require a physician's referral for reimbursement of your fees.

If you have immediate medical concerns, please see your physician to ensure there are no contraindications to starting physiotherapy. If there are no immediate concerns, or once you've been cleared of any medical issues, accessing physiotherapy right away can aid in accurate diagnosis, create an optimal healing environment, and prevent delays in recovery.

Yes, Henday Innovation Physio clinics can direct bill most extended health benefit plans.

Absolutely! We prioritize one-on-one treatments for our patients. Alongside time spent with your physiotherapist, you may also interact with physiotherapy assistants who help with modality setups, takedowns, and exercise supervision.

At Henday Innovation Physio, our first step is to perform a detailed assessment to identify what needs to be addressed. Following this, our physical therapists will create a balanced treatment plan, including manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, thermal and electrical modalities, and acupuncture.

An assessment helps us get to the root of your pain and movement-related problems. It allows us to diagnose your condition, set treatment goals, and develop a tailored treatment plan

The number of treatments required depends on several factors, including the severity of your injury, any other medical issues, and your treatment goals. Your physiotherapist will provide a recovery timeframe following your initial assessment.

You may feel sore after your initial assessment because your physiotherapist needs to identify what reproduces your pain to address its root cause. Part of your initial assessment will include strategies to manage and reduce your pain post-assessment.

Booking an assessment is easy! Call Henday Innovation Physio and select a day and time that works for you. Unless specified by your extended health benefits plan, no doctor's prescription or referral is needed

Wear something comfortable. Your physical therapist will need to see the area being assessed or treated, so ensure that it can be exposed. We have shorts, T-shirts, and gowns available if needed. How long does it take for an assessment and treatment? The initial assessment typically lasts about an hour, while subsequent treatment visits are around 30 to 45 minutes each.

Each treatment plan is individualized. Generally, a physical therapy treatment might include manual therapy, a personalized exercise program, pain relief modalities, acupuncture or dry needling, and education.

One of our goals through physical therapy is to decrease pain, improve function, mobility, and strength, and give you tools to manage your injury at home. If your injury is highly irritable, your physical therapist can provide remedies to help settle your symptoms and give you necessary tools for home management. However, if the pain of traveling to the clinic outweighs the benefit, it may be best to reschedule your appointment.

Sports Injuries

Yes. Henday Innovation Physio's physical therapists are trained in numerous orthopedic dysfunctions, including athletic injuries. We are proud to have therapists affiliated with and treating various professional and elite-level athletic organizations. For more information, please visit our sports injury page

Preventing sports injuries involves identifying weaknesses and ensuring a healthy balance throughout the body. Our physiotherapists are trained to assess and identify muscle imbalances that affect mobility, strength, and agility. We work with you to develop a prevention program to keep you in the game.

We meet with you to learn If you often experience knee pain while running, it’s advisable to schedule an assessment with your physiotherapist and discontinue running until then. Often, an imbalance or weakness could be contributing to your pain. We recommend avoiding running until you’ve had a comprehensive physical examination by one of our physiotherapists.

We meet with you to learn If you suspect you have a concussion from playing a sport, it is essential to undergo a period of physical and mental rest. Once concussion symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and headaches begin to subside, a gradual return to sport can commence, provided symptoms continue to improve. Schedule an assessment with one of our specially trained concussion physiotherapists for more information and treatment following a concussion

Aches & Pains

Both TENS and IFC work to modulate your pain through similar mechanisms. Receptors on our skin are stimulated by the gentle vibrations created by TENS and IFC electrodes. This non-painful stimulus blocks the entry of painful stimuli and prevents pain messages from being sent to our brain. Generally, TENS works to provide pain relief, while IFC works to provide an anti-inflammatory effect.

Both heat and ice can be helpful in managing an injury; however, in certain circumstances, one may be better than the other. In general, use ice for new or acute injuries to calm down signs of inflammation (heat, redness, and swelling). Use heat to treat older or chronic injuries and muscle tightness.

Therapists use electrical muscle stimulation to treat pain and swelling by recruiting weak or underutilized muscles and promoting tissue healing.

A TENS or IFC modality should always feel strong but comfortable. Comfortable intensity will differ between patients, but it should always be pain-free.

Joint and low back stiffness is a common complaint that may benefit from physical therapy interventions such as pain modalities, an active exercise program, and manual therapy to improve joint mobility, range of motion, and strength. Speciality Services

Manual Therapy is a “hands-on” approach to treating injuries related to the structures forming joints, associated muscles, connective tissues (ligaments and tendons), and nerve tissue. This therapy may include deep tissue techniques like massage or friction, joint mobilization, and soft tissue (e.g., muscles and nerves) mobilization. Manual Therapy may also involve a certified professional manipulating the joints or spine, moving a joint beyond its dysfunctional motion limits but within its anatomical limits. This manipulation involves a controlled, high-speed, and localized thrust, which may or may not result in a “popping” sensation that is usually painless. These techniques help reduce pain and restore movement and function to joints and accompanying soft tissue structures.

Traction is a treatment technique that can help ease neck and back pain when combined with exercise and Manual Therapy. A therapist applies traction during Manual Therapy, but it can also be applied for a more extended time using a traction machine. Traction applies a gentle force to elongate the joint spaces, decreasing the pressure on joints and nerve roots. This treatment can be especially effective for disc-related nerve pain and spinal stenosis.

Both acupuncture and IMS are dry-needling techniques to treat pain and inflammation typically associated with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. The most significant difference is that acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles and is guided by pre-determined points meant to modulate pain by manipulating Chi in the body. IMS, on the other hand, is based on western medicine’s understanding of muscles and nerves and is used to treat neuropathic pain. During IMS, the therapist inserts an acupuncture needle into tight bands of muscle along the spine and the affected muscles.

Typically, insurance companies view acupuncture provided by a physiotherapist as part of physiotherapy treatment. A registered acupuncturist must offer the service to ensure that acupuncture treatments are covered under your allowance

Absolutely. All of our facilities have Physical Therapists certified in acupuncture and IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation). Another form of dry needling similar to IMS is GTT (Gokavi Transverse Techniques). Please inform our office if this is a form of treatment you request, and we will schedule you with the appropriate Physical Therapist.

Motor Vechiles Accident

If you have been in a motor vehicle accident, ensure that the accident gets reported to your motor vehicle insurance provider. If there are any immediate medical concerns, please see your physician to assess these concerns and ensure there are no contraindications to beginning physical therapy. You can access physical therapy coverage for MVA injuries through the Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols or Section B Protocols.

The 21 treatments allocated within MVA protocols can be used up more quickly if more than one body part requires treatment. One treatment unit is designated per body site, which can change the number of sessions covered.
